Bhaichung Bhutia Scouts Young Football Talent in Arunachal Pradesh
Itanagar: A major boost to grassroots football development in Arunachal Pradesh unfolded as former Indian football captain Bhaichung Bhutia launched a week-long trial and assessment camp at Kiyit village playground, Mebo Sub-Division.
Organized under the initiative of Mebo MLA Oken Tayeng, the program has drawn over 250 young footballers, offering them an opportunity to train under one of India’s most celebrated footballers.
The trials, running from March 14 to 21, are open to boys and girls aged 13 to 19, with participants arriving from different parts of the state, including Doimukh in Papum Pare district.
The initiative, aimed at identifying and nurturing raw talent, was inaugurated in the presence of MLA Oken Tayeng, ADC Mebo Sibo Passing, EAC Nancy Yirang Modi, local leaders, and representatives of Kiyit village-based group ‘Yondip.’
MLA Tayeng, who has sponsored all necessary training equipment, jerseys, and food, emphasized his commitment to building a strong football culture in Arunachal Pradesh. Speaking at the event, Bhaichung Bhutia praised the talent pool in the state and stressed the need for structured training programs to help young players reach their full potential.
Sharing his own journey from Tinkitam, a small village in South Sikkim, to becoming the captain of the Indian football team, Bhutia urged the players to stay committed and disciplined. He reminded them that football is not just about talent but also about relentless hard work and perseverance.
“If I can make it from Tinkitam, why not you?” Bhutia encouraged, citing examples of football legends like Sunil Chhetri, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Lionel Messi, who continue to play at the highest level despite their age. His message resonated deeply with the aspiring footballers, many of whom had only seen him on television before.
The initiative has received strong backing from Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, who is also the President of the Arunachal Football Association. Bhutia acknowledged Khandu’s dedication to developing football in the region and expressed hope that more such programs would emerge in the future.
MLA Oken Tayeng described the event as a game-changer for Mebo’s sporting aspirations, announcing his plans to establish a football academy in Mebo. “This collaboration with Bhaichung Bhutia Football Schools marks a turning point in our journey to nurture future football stars. I sincerely thank Bhaichung Bhutia for traveling from Sikkim to inspire and guide our young players,” Tayeng stated.
The trials will conclude on March 21, following which the best-performing players will be selected for advanced training, scholarships, and sponsorships under the Bhaichung Bhutia Football Schools (BBFS) program. As excitement builds among the participants and the local community, this initiative stands as a stepping stone for Arunachal Pradesh’s young footballers to make their mark on the national and international stage.
