Bhairabi-Sairang Railway Project Nears Completion, Set to Boost Connectivity in Mizoram

Aizawl: The ambitious Bhairabi-Sairang railway project, aimed at connecting Mizoram’s capital, Aizawl, with the rest of India, is in its final stages, according to a recent statement by Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR).

The 51.38-kilometer rail line, a critical infrastructure project, promises to be a game-changer for the region, enhancing communication and commerce.

As per the NFR’s statement released on October 19, approximately 17.38 kilometers of the railway line have already been completed and became operational in July, with train services starting in August.

The entire stretch from Bhairabi to Sairang is divided into four key sections: Bhairabi–Hortoki, Hortoki–Kawnpui, Kawnpui–Mualkhang, and Mualkhang–Sairang.

The project’s construction has been marked by its complexity, involving 48 tunnels with a total length of 12,853 meters, of which 12,807 meters have been successfully completed.

Additionally, the railway will feature 55 major bridges, 87 minor bridges, five road overbridges, and six road underbridges, providing a comprehensive and reliable transport network.

One of the notable engineering achievements includes the completion of the project’s tallest pier, standing at 104 meters, near the Sairang station.

The line will serve four key stations: Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang, and Sairang, bringing essential connectivity to these areas.

The NFR highlighted the various challenges faced during construction, including harsh weather conditions, difficult terrain, dense forests, and limited accessibility.

The monsoon season posed significant hurdles, reducing available working hours, while the scarcity of construction materials and skilled labor further complicated progress. Despite these challenges, the NFR is determined to see the project through, committing to its timely completion.

Upon completion, the Bhairabi-Sairang railway is expected to provide enhanced connectivity to Mizoram, facilitating small-scale industries and boosting tourism, while also addressing the region’s logistical challenges. The project is a testament to the NFR’s resolve to strengthen infrastructure and integrate remote areas with the national network.
