‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ of Assam Congress Reaches Guwahati
Guwahati: The “Bharat Jodo Yatra” of the Assam Congress which included participation from the opposition Raijor Dal reached Guwahati.
General secretary of the All India Congress Committee Jitendra Singh, Assam, Sikkim, and Manipur state congress presidents, former Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Nabam Tuki and other leaders took part in the 8-kilometer march through the city’s streets, according to party spokesperson Manjit Mahanta.
“More than 500 people joined the march on Thursday (Nov 17),” he said.
The “Bharat Jodo Yatra” was launched by the Congress, the largest opposition party in Assam, on November 1 in the Dhubri district with a goal of travelling 834 kilometres in 70 days.
In addition to the 3,570-kilometer main yatra from Kanyakumari to Kashmir, the Congress is planning a number of subsidiary marches in areas through which the main yatra would not pass, according to PTI.
The Raijor Dal sent representatives to the gathering in the city to show their support for the initiative, according to a spokesperson for the Congress.
“The Raijor Dal is supporting our yatra as it wants to deter the BJP’s expansionist designs,” he said.
The Congress spokesperson said other opposition parties of the state and prominent citizens will join the rally on Friday, which had already passed through Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s Jalukbari constituency on Wednesday.
The march’s conclusion would take place near Sadiya in the state’s easternmost region, the spokeswoman stated.
