Bharat Jodo Yatra Reached Guwahati: People of Assam Want “Change”
Guwahati: The state capital of Assam welcomed the concurrently beginning Bharat Jodo Yatra on Thursday, where thousands of Congress officials and supporters were present. They claimed that people in the state want change.
While the “Bharat Jodo Yatra,” led by Rahul Gandhi, began in Kanyakumari on September 7 and is still in Maharashtra, the Assam State Congress’ “Bharat Jodo Yatra” saw thousands of leaders and workers gather in the state’s capital Guwahati on Thursday.
The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) launched its own “Bharat Jodo Yatra” with the intention of travelling 834 km across the state in 70 days, taking inspiration from the Rahul-led nationwide march that has already traversed several states.
The Assam march by the Congress began from Golakganj in the Dhubri district at the border between Assam and West Bengal and travelled towards Sadiya district on the border between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
AICC general secretary Jitendra Singh, Congress MPs Gaurav Gogoi, Pradyut Bordoloi and Abdul Khaleque, as well as party MLAs Rakibul Hussain, Rekibuddin Ahmed, Nandita Das, Sibamoni Borah and Jakir Hussain Sikdar joined thousands of Congress leaders and supporters as the march entered Guwahati on Thursday.
According to Singh Assam citizens want change. “On November 1, this Yatra was launched in the Dhubri district’s Golakganj and it has since made its way to Guwahati. The 834 km route will end in the Sadiya district “Said Singh.
The Congress politician attacked the Assam government’s BJP, the Badruddin Ajmal-led AIUDF and the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), alleging that they had formed a “Mahajot” (grand alliance).
“The BJP, AIUDF and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) have entered into a ‘Mahajot’. But the people of Assam now want change. In the coming days, the people give a reply to this grand alliance,” Singh said.
The 12-kilometer “Bharat Jodo Yatra” in Assam end in Guwahati at Chandmari.
Congress state president Bhupen Kumar Borah previously stated that the party’s march in Assam will provide the party in the state the much-needed impetus ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and the panchayat elections, which will be held following year.
Dhubri, Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Nalbari, Kamrup (Rural), Kamrup (Metro), Morigaon, Nagaon, Golaghat, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts are scheduled to be covered by the Assam leg of the Bharat Jodo Yatra.
