Bhutanese king Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck lands in Guwahati, in India for week long state visit
Guwahati, 3rd November: Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuk arrived in Guwahati today as part of his week-long state visit to India. He landed at Guwahati’s Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, accompanied by his family members and senior officials from the Bhutanese government.
King Wangchuk was recieved at the airport by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma along with ministers Ranoj Pegu, Ranjit Kumar Dass, other officials and dignitaries of the government.
During his stay in Assam, the Bhutanese King, along with his wife Queen Pema Jetsun and their two sons, is scheduled to visit the Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati. Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria will host a special dinner for the Bhutanese royal family at the Raj Bhawan. Later today, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is set to pay a courtesy call to the Bhutanese King at the Radisson Blu Hotel, where the royal entourage will be staying during their visit to Assam.
Throughout his week-long visit, King Wangchuk will hold meetings with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and other senior officials of the Central government. The state visit will conclude on November 10.
In addition to Assam, the Bhutanese delegation will also visit Maharashtra during their week-long state visit. The Indian government has put in place extensive arrangements to ensure the smooth progress of the Bhutanese King’s visit to Assam, including the imposition of traffic restrictions in Guwahati during the visit.
Prior to the King’s arrival, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had a meeting with Bhutan’s Ambassador to India, Major General Vetsop Namgyel, on November 1. As a goodwill gesture, the Assam government has announced the reservation of five medical college seats in the state for Bhutanese students.
It’s worth noting that this state visit follows recent boundary talks between China and Bhutan in Beijing, where they signed an agreement on the “responsibilities and functions of the joint technical team on the delimitation and demarcation of the Bhutan-China boundary.”
