Bihu Dance Controversy: Resident from Assam in Delhi Files RTI
Guwahati: A resident of Assam in Delhi has registered an RTI in response to the Bihu dance performed on Monday in New Delhi during the welcome ceremony for Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
Assam origin Sonit Kumar Goswami has complained to the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs about the controversial Bihu dance.
It should be noted that despite Goswami’s inquiries to the Ministry of Cultural Affairs regarding the Bihu dance, he never received a response, necessitating the filing of the RTI.
Notably, netizens have described the performance as being “distorted” in its presentation. The motions, outfits, and musical instruments employed have nothing in common with the dance performance, which was offensive to Assamese culture and heritage.
A senior official and business delegation travelled to New Delhi on Monday to meet with the president of the Maldives. The delegation was greeted with the Bihu dance.
Meanwhile, the Assamese Bihu Kristi Parishad has requested harsh punishment for the event’s organisers in light of the events. The council’s spokesperson Dr. Deepen Das and advisor Bhaben Duvari described it as an “unfortunate episode” during a press conference. The council urged the state government to look into the situation as well.
