Bihu Dance Performed in ‘Distorted’ Manner Sparks Controversy in Assam

Guwahati: A Bihu dance performed during the welcome ceremony of Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in New Delhi has sparked controversy across Assam on Monday.

The performance has been described as being presented in a “distorted” way by online users. The motions, outfits, and musical instruments employed have nothing in common with the dance performance, which was offensive to Assamese culture and heritage.

A senior official and business delegation arrived to New Delhi on Monday to meet with the president of the Maldives. The delegation was greeted with the Bihu dance.

Meanwhile, the Bihu Kristi Parishad of Assam has requested harsh punishment for the event’s organisers in light of the incident. The council’s spokesperson Dr. Deepen Das and advisor Bhaben Duvari described it as an “unfortunate episode” during a press conference. The council urged the state government to look into the situation as well.
