Biswajit Daimary: Need to promote indigenous sports
Guwahati: Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary emphasised the importance of promoting local sports so that they can be recognised on a global scale.
Daimary was speaking at the start of a year-long celebration of sports journalism in Assam’s centennial year.
He also emphasised the responsibility of the media in promoting athletes so they can access appropriate training facilities and other advantages from the government, clubs, or other organisations.
He said, “The native sports are anchored and connected with the people of a certain location. The need to promote and popularise these is higher.”
He argued that several of these disciplines may achieve both international reputation and inclusion in the Olympic Games with the right push.
Daimary added that international matches are the only athletic event where Bodo is spoken on the field.
“There are numerous indigenous sports that might attract fans from throughout the world. Sports journalists are essential to getting more attention for issues,” he said.
Daimary also emphasised the responsibility of sports journalists in promoting outstanding athletes and ensuring that athletes deserving of special facilities can take advantage of them.
Regarding the government’s sports programmes, he said, “Due to a lack of facilities, our players are left with little to no means to continue their training and pursue their sport. The media may play a critical role in raising awareness of the government programmes available to qualified and aspiring athletes.”
The speaker claimed that in addition to playing a crucial part in making sure that players receive the proper training opportunities, exposure, and other advantages.
Several sports journalists of the state were felicitated and a souvenir was released at the inaugural ceremony.
