BJP and Congress gear up for Assam Election Season

Guwahati: Election Season has once again bloomed in Assam with by-elections just a few days ahead. This time, the elections will seem to be much more interesting.

As per the latest candidate lists announced by the parties in Assam, three candidates are in the limelight. These candidates are Rupjyoti Kurmi, Sushanta Borgohain, and Phanidhar Talukdar.

These three won the general Assam Assembly election from different parties this year but due to various reasons, they resigned from their position as legislators in order to join the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Among the two, Rupjyoti Kurmi and Sushanta Borgohain were “top members” of the Congress in Assam and they were seen as leaders by the Congress leaders in the state and no one had thought that they could have left the party in order to join the BJP. But, both of them eventually did and on joining the party, they had resigned from their seat as legislators.

Now, both of them have been re-fielded by the BJP against Congress. Rupjyoti Kurmi who was elected multiple times from the Mariani constituency had been one of the most vocal politicians from the Congress. He will now be contesting against the Congress in Mariani. In a similar manner, Sushanta Borgohain will also be contesting against the Congress’s candidate in the Thowra constituency.

Whereas, Phanidhar Talukdar will be contesting from the Bhabanipur constituency for the BJP. He was earlier an active member of the Badruddin Ajmal-led All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF).

With these candidates being finalized by the BJP, the Congress too announced their list of candidates for the upcoming by-polls.

All India Congress Committee (AICC) has announced Jowel Tudu will contest for the Gossaigaon, Bhaskar Dahal from Tamulpur, and Manoranjan Konwar from Thowra.

Along with this, the strongest competitor for the Congress will be Rupjyoti Kurmi and so they have decided to field Luhit Konwar for the Mariani constituency. Sailendra Nath Das will contest from the Bhabanipur seat from Congress’s side.

It may be mentioned that the nominations for the by-polls will be filed on October 6 while the polling will be held on October 30.
