BJP Assures Manipur’s Territorial Integrity After President’s Rule Imposition

Imphal: Following the imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur, BJP MP Sambit Patra on February 14 reaffirmed his party’s commitment to maintaining the state’s territorial integrity and restoring peace.

As BJP’s North East in-charge, Patra emphasized that the party remains steadfast in ensuring stability in the conflict-ridden state while adopting a strict stance against illegal infiltration.

With heightened security in Imphal amid political uncertainty and ethnic tensions, Patra clarified that the decision to impose President’s Rule was based on a report by Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla.

The Manipur Legislative Assembly has been placed under “suspended animation,” meaning it can be revived whenever deemed appropriate by the President of India.

Patra assured that the BJP will not allow any compromise on Manipur’s territorial integrity, stating that any illegal infiltration will be dealt with firmly.

His remarks came days after the resignation of former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on February 9, a move prompted by prolonged political instability and violence in the state.

President Droupadi Murmu imposed President’s Rule under Article 356 of the Constitution, effectively transferring the state assembly’s powers to Parliament.

The Union Home Ministry’s official gazette notification confirmed that Manipur’s administration will now be directly controlled by the President through the Governor.

The proclamation allows President’s Rule to last up to six months, subject to parliamentary approval. During this period, the central government will oversee governance, with the possibility of fresh elections being announced to restore democratic functioning in the state.

The move marks a critical phase in Manipur’s political landscape as efforts intensify to bring lasting peace to the troubled region.
