BJP Clinches Majority in Arunachal Pradesh Assembly Elections
Northeast Desk, 2nd June: In a notable political triumph, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a majority in the Arunachal Pradesh assembly elections held on April 19, winning 37 seats in the 60-member assembly. This victory further consolidates BJP’s influence in the northeastern state.
Vote counting for the 50 contested seats is still underway. The BJP has already won 27 of these seats and is leading in 8 others. In addition, the party claimed victory in 10 uncontested seats, emphasizing its dominant position. With these results, the BJP is poised to win 4 more seats than the 41 it secured in the 2019 elections.
Despite the overall success, the BJP faced some significant defeats. Er Taba Tedir, the sitting Education Minister and BJP candidate from the Yachuli assembly constituency, lost to Toko Tatung of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). Similarly, in the West Siang district, sitting BJP MLA Liromoba Nyamar Karbak was defeated by Pesi Jilen of the National People’s Party (NPP). Another notable shift occurred in the Basar constituency, where sitting NPP MLA Gokar Basar was defeated by BJP candidate Nyabi Jini Dirchi.
The election results highlight both the strength of the BJP in Arunachal Pradesh and the dynamic nature of local political contests, with significant victories and losses shaping the state’s political landscape.
