BJP Leader Demands Congress Clarify Stand on Allegations Against Gaurav Gogoi’s Wife

New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Tarun Chugh has called on Congress Chief Mallikarjun Kharge and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi to break their silence on the allegations leveled by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma against Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi’s wife, Elizabeth. Chugh accused the Congress leadership of evading responsibility and demanded a clear stance on the matter.

Chugh raised concerns over Gogoi’s past meeting with the Pakistan High Commission and alleged links between his wife and Pakistan’s intelligence agency, ISI. He questioned whether Gogoi was aware of these alleged connections before marriage and why he failed to inform the Home Ministry or Parliament about his Pakistan visit. Additionally, Chugh alleged that Elizabeth’s association with Caritas, an organization accused of religious conversions, warranted further scrutiny.

The BJP leader further claimed that Gogoi’s political rise coincided with his marriage and questioned the timing of his induction as an MP. He also pressed for an explanation on why Elizabeth had not taken Indian citizenship.

The controversy intensified after Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma reiterated his allegations, stating that there was “definite information” of Elizabeth Gogoi visiting Pakistan post-marriage. Sarma hinted at forming a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe her passport and visa records, along with alleged sympathizers linked to the case. The Assam Cabinet is expected to discuss the formation of the SIT soon, he added.

The accusations have triggered a heated political row, with Gogoi dismissing them as “laughable.” The Congress MP responded sarcastically, saying, “If my wife is an ISI agent, then I am an R&AW agent of India.” He accused Sarma of trying to divert attention from allegations against himself and asserted that the claims were politically motivated.

The BJP’s allegations also include a decade-old meeting that Gogoi led with the then-Pakistani High Commissioner in 2015. While the Congress has largely remained silent on the issue, Gogoi has stood firm in his defense, calling the controversy an attempt to malign his family. As the political battle escalates, all eyes are on whether the Congress leadership will issue a response or let the matter continue to unfold.
