BJP likely to withdraw support from NPP-led alliance in Meghalaya
Guwahati: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is likely to withdraw its support from the National People’s Party (NPP)-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government within a month, party national vice president and Meghalaya in-charge M Chuba Ao said on Saturday.
The BJP has two MLAs in the coalition government made up of six parties, led by the NPP of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma.
Ao stated that discussions over the topic are currently taking place at various levels within the party and that a definitive course of action will be revealed one month after the end of negotiations.
He stated that the CBI will handle the accusations once they had all the paperwork and that the party has been keeping track of the many reports of allegations of corruption against the Meghalaya government.
The relationship between the Sangma-led NPP and the Meghalaya BJP vice president, Bernard N. Marak has reportedly deteriorated since his imprisonment, despite the fact that the BJP is a significant member of the North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA).
Marak was detained on July 25 in Uttar Pradesh on suspicion of operating a brothel in the West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya.
BJP leaders and party members had organised protests earlier in Tura to call for an impartial investigation into the case, and party members in the West Garo Hills district had organised a signature drive to call for the dismissal of the district’s deputy commissioner and superintendent of police (SP) due to the matter.
BJP officials defended Marak by asserting that the farmhouse busted in the prostitution case has been in operation since 2019. However, raids were conducted there months before the state’s assembly elections in order to tarnish Marak’s reputation and his political aspirations.
