BJP Meghalaya Engages with Protesting NEIAH Trainees Amid Hunger Strike Over Stipend Issues
Shillong: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Meghalaya has intervened in the ongoing hunger strike by postgraduate trainees of the North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda and Homeopathy (NEIAH) in Mawdiangdiang. The trainees, who began their protest on November 26, allege non-payment of their stipends for over a year.
A state BJP delegation, led by Cabinet Minister AL Hek, visited the protest site and engaged with both the trainees and NEIAH officials to address the escalating situation. BJP chief spokesperson M Kharkrang reported that officials had assured the resolution of the trainees’ grievances within 8-10 days. Kharkrang urged the students to suspend their hunger strike, particularly after one protester was hospitalized due to deteriorating health.
The BJP delegation has also pledged to escalate the matter to the central government to ensure swift action.
The protesting trainees have raised concerns over delayed stipend disbursement, affiliation issues, and improper guide allocations for their academic programs. They accuse senior NEIAH officials, including the director and deputy director, of neglecting their responsibilities and failing to engage with the students on these pressing issues.
The trainees are expected to conclude their hunger strike on December 2, following assurances of intervention and resolution from the BJP and NEIAH authorities.
