BJP MP Dilip Saikia Supports Assam Government’s Beef Ban in Public Spaces

Assam: BJP MP from Darrang-Udalguri, Dilip Saikia, has expressed strong support for the Assam government’s decision to prohibit the consumption and serving of beef in public spaces, citing its alignment with the values of Sanatana culture.

“Cows hold the status of a mother in Sanatana tradition. While private consumption is a personal choice, serving beef in public spaces is inappropriate as it is inedible to many and clashes with cultural sentiments,” Saikia stated, addressing concerns about the ban.

He emphasized that the decision carries no communal intent, adding, “This move is solely aimed at upholding India’s cultural values and sensitivities.”

The announcement, led by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, extends the scope of the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021. Previously, the Act restricted cattle slaughter and the consumption of beef in areas close to temples and certain institutions. Under the new directive, the prohibition now applies to public places statewide, including hotels and restaurants.

“We enacted the prohibition law three years ago, which was successful in preserving cattle. This expansion reinforces our commitment to cultural preservation and community harmony,” the Chief Minister explained.

The ban has sparked widespread discussions across the state. Saikia reiterated that the move is about respecting tradition, dismissing claims of targeting any specific community.

The directive marks another step in the Assam government’s ongoing efforts to safeguard cultural norms under its cattle preservation policies.
