BJP Secures 70% of Tripura Panchayat Seats Unopposed in Latest Election
Northeast Desk, 24th July: In a decisive victory, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won approximately 70% of the seats in Tripura’s three-tier panchayat system uncontested, according to official reports released on Tuesday. The panchayat system, which includes gram panchayats, panchayat samitis, and zilla parishads, consists of 6,889 total seats. Of these, the BJP secured 4,805 seats without a contest.
Specifically, the BJP clinched 4,550 of the 6,370 seats in the gram panchayats uncontested, resulting in no polling required for 71% of these positions. In the 1,819 gram panchayat seats where elections will take place, the BJP has candidates in 1,809 seats. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] has candidates in 1,222 seats, and the Congress in 731 seats. BJP ally Tipra Motha has fielded candidates in 138 seats.
The panchayat samitis saw the BJP win 235 of the 423 seats uncontested, which is 55% of the total. Polling will be conducted for the remaining 188 seats, where the BJP has candidates in all positions. The CPI(M) and Congress have candidates in 148 and 98 seats, respectively, with Tipra Motha fielding candidates in 11 seats.
In the zilla parishads, the BJP won 20 out of 116 seats uncontested, approximately 17% of the total. The party has candidates in all 96 seats where polling will occur, while the CPI(M) and Congress have candidates in 81 and 76 seats, respectively.
The final date for withdrawal of candidatures was July 22. Polling is scheduled for August 8, with vote counting set for August 12. The BJP’s strong performance follows a similar trend from the last elections, where the party won 96% of the seats unopposed.
