BJP Women Candidates Sweep Arunachal Pradesh Assembly Elections
Northeast Desk, 3rd June: In a significant victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Arunachal Pradesh, all four women candidates fielded by the party have won their respective seats in the recent assembly elections.
Out of the eight women who contested in the polls, four represented the BJP, three were from the Congress, and one was an Independent.
Victorious BJP Candidates:
- Dasanglu Pul: The widow of former Chief Minister Kalikho Pul, she won the Hayuliang seat in Anjaw district unopposed. This marks her third consecutive victory in this constituency. Pul initially won a by-election in 2016 following her husband’s tragic death and secured the seat again in 2019.
- Tsering Lhamu: She secured the Lumla seat with a margin of 1,531 votes. Lhamu previously won a by-election in February last year after her husband, former lawmaker Jambey Tashi, passed away due to cardiac arrest in November 2022.
- Chakat Aboh: Aboh emerged victorious in the Khonsa West seat by a margin of 804 votes. She first won the seat in a 2019 by-election after her husband, Tirong Aboh of the NPP, was assassinated by NSCN militants a day before the election results were declared.
- Nyabi Jini Dirchi: A political newcomer, Dirchi defeated incumbent MLA Gokar Basar in the Basar constituency by a margin of 1,791 votes.
In comparison, the Congress fielded three women candidates, and an Independent candidate also contested, but none of them secured a win.
This victory adds to the BJP’s strong performance in the state, where women candidates have shown increasing prominence. In the previous 2019 elections, three women won assembly seats, including Dasanglu Pul, Gum Tayeng from Dambuk, and Jummum Ete Deori from the Leka seat.
