Blockbuster K-Pop Demon Hunters Sequel On the Cards

New Delhi: Fans of Netflix’s animated smash hit, KPop Demon Hunters, have reason to celebrate. Early talks for a sequel are reportedly underway between the streaming giant and Sony Pictures Animation, following the film’s record-breaking summer run. The movie, which premiered in June, has officially become Netflix’s most-watched film ever, surpassing the previous record holder, Red Notice, with an astounding 236 million views.

The original film, which follows K-pop idols Rumi, Mira, and Zoey as they balance stardom with their secret lives as demon slayers, has become a cultural phenomenon. Its success isn’t limited to streaming; a recent sing-along theatrical release landed at the top spot at the U.S. box office, raking in a cool $19.2 million on its opening weekend.

Co-director Maggie Kang, who helmed the project with Chris Appelhans, had previously hinted at a desire to delve deeper into the backstories of the Huntr/x members, particularly Zoey and Mira. “There’s a lot we couldn’t fit into the 85 minutes,” Kang told Variety, suggesting that the next chapter could resolve some of the unanswered questions.

While no official details on the plot or release timeline have been confirmed, the sequel talks signal a promising future for the franchise. The film’s unprecedented success, from its streaming numbers to its theatrical triumph, positions it as a major franchise for Netflix, which is actively looking to expand its original content library. With its high-octane action, catchy soundtrack, and compelling characters, it seems the demon-slaying idols are far from finished.
