Body of Hindu Woman Exhumed in Assam’s Darrang District

Guwahati: In a tragic incident in Assam’s Darrang district, the body of a Hindu woman, who had passed away in her sixties in Pithakhuwa village, was exhumed by authorities after her family buried her due to apparent financial constraints for cremation.

The woman, who was unmarried, had died at her residence in the Sipajhar area. Instead of following traditional Hindu cremation practices, her family had opted to bury the body. The village headman informed authorities about the death on Wednesday, prompting immediate action.

Local officials, after notifying the district commissioner (DC) and local police, received orders to exhume the body, which was carried out on Friday. A post-mortem examination will be conducted at Mangaldai Civil Hospital, and the last rites, in accordance with Hindu customs, are expected to be performed on Saturday.

Authorities have urged families facing financial difficulties in carrying out last rites to reach out for assistance and have called for community support during such difficult times.
