Border Tension Eases: 32 Previously Closed Indian Airports Reopen for Civil Aviation
National: In a significant development, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has announced the immediate reopening of 32 airports that were temporarily shut down for civil aircraft operations. This decision, effective today, comes after a period of heightened India-Pakistan border tensions that had led to the closure until the previously anticipated date of May 15, 2025.
The closure, which included key airports such as Srinagar and Amritsar, was initially implemented as a safety protocol following India’s strikes on terror camps on May 7 and the subsequent shelling along the border by Pakistan. This precautionary measure aimed to safeguard civilian air travel amidst the escalating military situation in the region.
With the lifting of the closure notice, all 32 affected airports are now operational for civil aviation. The AAI is advising passengers to directly contact their respective airlines and regularly check airline websites for the most current information regarding their flight schedules and status.
The airports that have resumed operations are primarily located in the northern and western parts of India. These include vital airfields in Adhampur, Ambala, Amritsar, Jammu, and Srinagar, among other locations that were impacted by the temporary suspension that commenced on May 9, 2025.
This reopening brings considerable relief to both passengers and the aviation industry, paving the way for the resumption of normal flight operations in the region. Nevertheless, travellers are still urged to remain in contact with their airlines for any potential updates or modifications to flight timings.
