Border Town Cheers for Health and Harmony: Darranga’s “Run for Happiness” a Roaring Success

Guwahati: The scenic Indo-Bhutan border town of Darranga, nestled in Assam’s Tamulpur district, was abuzz with energy today as it successfully hosted the 21-kilometre “Run for Happiness” half-marathon. This vibrant initiative, orchestrated by the Tamulpur District Administration under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, saw over 200 spirited participants pound the pavement, all in the name of a healthier society.

The marathon was not just about crossing the finish line; it was a powerful statement against pressing social ills. Its core objective was to amplify awareness on the perils of drug abuse, the unacceptability of child marriage, and the paramount importance of road safety. Each stride taken by the enthusiastic runners served as a testament to the community’s commitment to fostering healthy lifestyles and nurturing a responsible citizenry.

District Commissioner Pankaj Chakravarty, who officially flagged off the event, underscored the critical role of collective action in tackling pervasive societal challenges. “I hope this initiative will send a positive message across the state on issues like drugs, child marriage, and road safety,” he remarked, his words resonating with the gathered crowd.

Echoing the DC’s sentiments, Tamulpur Superintendent of Police Diganta Kumar Choudhury commended the proactive stance of the administration. He highlighted how “Such events will greatly contribute towards eliminating social evils like drug abuse and child marriage,” reinforcing the comprehensive nature of the campaign.

Local MLA Jolen Daimary, a prominent figure at the event, extended his heartfelt gratitude to both the administration for their foresight and the participants for their dedication. He seized the opportunity to share a moment of pride for the district, announcing that the Tamulpur Development Block had clinched the top spot among 500 blocks nationwide in a recent NITI Aayog survey. He specifically lauded DC Pankaj Chakravarty and his team for this remarkable achievement.

The spirited half-marathon culminated in a felicitation ceremony for the ten outstanding winners, comprising five male and five female athletes, who shared a total prize purse of ₹1 lakh. The victorious female runners included Songmir Teronpi and Senlibon Teronpi from Karbi Anglong, Priya Basumatary of Udalguri, and Tamulpur’s own Phulmoni Hasda and Anita Hasda. Among the male champions were Tikheshwar Kurmi from Golaghat, Hitesh Baro of Baksa, Surya Das from Morigaon, Banjot Teron representing West Karbi Anglong, and Sandeep Singh, who travelled all the way from Jammu.

The event was graced by a host of dignitaries, including former MLA Emmanuel Mushahary and nominated MCLA Hemanta Kumar Rabha, alongside a significant turnout of district officials, dedicated self-help group members, eager students, and enthusiastic local residents, all converging to celebrate this significant stride towards a happier, healthier Tamulpur.
