Brahmaputra Border Watch: Locals Nab 30 Bangladeshi Nationals Fleeing Assam
Guwahati: A late-night chase in Assam’s Cachar district saw alert villagers at Jalalpur detain over 30 Bangladeshi nationals, including women and children, who were allegedly attempting to flee India. The group, travelling in several passenger autorickshaws under the cloak of darkness, raised suspicions among the locals near the India-Bangladesh border, leading to their interception.
Upon a quick round of questioning, the villagers confirmed their fears – the individuals were indeed Bangladeshi citizens. Without wasting a moment, the local residents alerted the Cachar police, who swiftly arrived at the scene. The entire group was taken into custody and subsequently moved to Silchar, where they are currently housed at the Police Reserve Hospital for further verification and to complete the necessary legal procedures.
Preliminary investigations suggest that these Bangladeshi nationals had been residing and working illegally as labourers in various parts of India. With the government’s intensified crackdown on illegal immigrants, it is believed that the group was attempting a desperate escape back to their country via the porous Jalalpur border, fearing imminent arrest. This incident underscores the persistent challenge of illegal cross-border migration and highlights the crucial role of vigilant local communities in bolstering border security in Assam and other Northeastern states.
