Bridge Collapse Severs Assam-Mizoram Link, One Person Rescued, Hundreds Stranded

Guwahati, September 14, 2024 – An old bridge connecting Assam and Mizoram collapsed last night, leaving three trucks stranded and one person missing. The incident occurred as two dumpers, loaded with stones for ongoing construction work on the Bhaga-Sherkhan link road, attempted to cross the bridge.

The structure gave way under the weight of the dumpers, leaving the trucks hanging precariously over the river. While there were no casualties, the collapse caused widespread panic in the area.

A large police contingent arrived quickly at the scene to manage the situation. After an initial search, they rescued a dumper driver who had gone missing, having been trapped inside his vehicle. Silchar MP Parimal Suklabaidya also visited the site during the night to assess the situation.

The bridge collapse has severely impacted communication, cutting off four villages in southern Dholai. Hundreds of vehicles remain stranded on both sides of the river, leading to significant disruptions.

Locals have alleged that the collapse was due to vehicle overloading, claiming the bridge was not designed to withstand such excessive weight. Frustration has mounted as residents blamed the transport department for negligence, demanding accountability for the accident.
