BSF Foils Major Smuggling Attempt at India-Bangladesh Border, Seizes Contraband Worth Over Rs 48 Lakh
National Desk, August 28, 2024 – In a significant operation at the India-Bangladesh border, Border Security Force (BSF) troops successfully intercepted a large-scale smuggling attempt, seizing contraband valued at over Rs 48 lakh and detaining three Bangladeshi nationals. The operation took place at the Integrated Check Post (ICP) Dawki, a key crossing point between the two nations.
Acting on specific intelligence, the 4th Battalion of BSF Meghalaya, in collaboration with local police, customs officials, and the Land Port Authority of India (LPAI), conducted a detailed search of the Shillong-Dhaka Maitri Bus, which was en route to Bangladesh. The bus, a regular service connecting Shillong and Dhaka, was halted for inspection based on credible information regarding potential smuggling activity.
Upon thorough examination, authorities uncovered a significant cache of smuggled goods concealed within various hidden compartments of the bus. The seized items included a large quantity of silver, sarees, and electronic goods such as mobile phones, headphones, and accessories.
The three individuals arrested in connection with the smuggling attempt were all staff members of the bus. They were unable to provide valid documentation for the goods found, raising further suspicion of their involvement in the illegal activity. The detainees have been handed over to the Customs Office at Dawki, where they will face further investigation and legal proceedings.
This successful operation underscores the BSF’s commitment to securing India’s borders and preventing the illegal movement of goods and individuals across the India-Bangladesh border. Authorities are continuing their investigations to uncover the full extent of the smuggling network involved.
