BSF Holds Border Coordination Meetings Amid Bangladesh Unrest; Meghalaya Suspends Border Haat Operations

Northeast Desk, 9th August: In response to escalating violence and political unrest in Bangladesh, the Border Security Force (BSF) Meghalaya frontier has organized coordination meetings with headmen and villagers from various border areas within its Area of Responsibility (AOR). The meetings aimed to raise awareness about the situation in Bangladesh and to encourage local residents to support effective border management efforts.

The gatherings focused on sensitizing border communities about the ongoing turmoil in Bangladesh and urged their cooperation with the BSF to ensure secure and efficient border control.

In a related move, the Meghalaya government has temporarily suspended business operations at the border haats—trading posts located at Balat in East Khasi Hills district and Kalaichar in South West Garo Hills district. This decision, announced on August 8, was driven by intelligence reports indicating a high risk of unauthorized activities, including cross-border movements by Bangladesh nationals, militant groups, and smugglers.

Authorities are taking these precautionary measures to prevent potential security breaches and ensure stability in the border regions amid the volatile situation across the international boundary.
