Budget Session of Parliament Begins Today

Guwahati: President Droupadi Murmu will address the joint sitting of the two Houses of Parliament on Tuesday to kick off the budget session of Parliament.

Along with the Economic Survey, the Union Budget will be presented to Parliament on Tuesday.

President Droupadi Murmu will be first address to the combined session of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. She won the presidential election last year.

The Rajya Sabha will meet separately to conduct government business which will start 30 minutes after the President’s Address on January 31.

However, the sitting will be held for a short duration as per procedures for the transaction of government business.

The first section of the session which will be split into two halves, will end on February 13. The second segment will begin on March 13 and run through April 6.

The government had an all-party meeting on Monday when the opposition parties voiced their concerns.

The Motion of Thanks to the President Address would also be discussed during the opening portion of the meeting. The debate will have a response from Prime Minister Narendra Modi in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.

During the budget session, the government will also forward its legislative agenda.

There are now nine bills in the Lok Sabha and 26 in the Rajya Sabha, according to government statistics.

Amongst the 26 Bills pending in the Rajya Sabha, three Bills have already been passed by Lok Sabha including the Inter-State River Water Disputes (Amendment) Bill, 2019, the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order (Third Amendment) Bill, 2022 and the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order (Fifth Amendment) Bill, 2022.

The bills which haven’t been referred to any parliamentary scrutiny and are pending for passage include the Tamil Nadu Legislative Council (Repeal) Bill, 2012, the Readjustment of Representation of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in Parliamentary and Assembly Constituencies (Third) Bill, 2013, the Delhi Rent (Repeal) Bill, 2013, and the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order (Amendment) Bill, 2019.
