Burmese Areca Nuts Worth 3 Cr Seized In Mizoram
Guwahati: Burmese areca nuts worth crores were seized near India-Myanmar border in Champhai district of Mizoram.
This was informed by officials on Tuesday.
Acting on a tip-off, a combined team of Assam Rifles along with the border customs department carried out an operation in Melbuk area along the international border.
During operation, as many as 780 sacks of Burmese areca nuts were found and seized.
According to officials, the enormous hoard was brought in illegally, housed in Mizoram, and was intended to be carried even deeper within.
Moreover, the entire seizure was estimated by officials to be worth around Rs 3.51 crores.
The enormous stockpile of areca nuts was kept in the Melbuk village in the Champhai area of Mizoram, according to officials.
An investigation into the incident has been initiated.
However, no arrests have been made in relation to the seizure as of yet.
