Bus falls into ravine leaving 27 dead and 17 injured in Mexico

International desk, 6 July: As many as 27 people including an infant died and 17 additional grave injuries after a bus travelling from Mexico City to Yosondua crashed into a ravine on Wednesday.

According to reports, the bus veered off the road and into a valley that was almost ten metres deep. The incident took place in Magdalena Penasco.

After the accident, Tlaxiaco Civil Protection officials arrived on the scene to move the injured to the town of Magdalena Penasco where locals, members of the municipal council and private ambulances transferred the injured to the Instituto Mexicano de Seguro Social (IMSS) facility.

However, to treat the injured assistance from all the local doctors was asked due to a scarcity of medical professionals. In addition to cranes to remove the bus, sheets or blankets were also needed to handle the bodies.

Initially, it was stated that there had been 25 fatalities and 17 injuries but due to the seriousness of the wounds two additional persons lost their lives at the site bringing the total to 27.

The accident reportedly occurred at 6:30 am (local time), according to the government. Among the dead were 13 women and 13 men and a one-year-old baby.

Meawnhile, the governor of Oaxaca, Salomon Jara has expressed regret on the accident and has ordered various state agencies to move to the spot to take care of the victims.

“I have given precise instructions to the Secretaries of Government, Health, Public Safety, Well-being, Tequio and Inclusion, Civil Protection, as well as the DIF, so that they move to the area of the accident in Magdalena Penasco to care for the people affected by this terrible accident,” Governor tweeted.
