By-Election Nomination Process Kicks Off in Assam for Five Assembly Seats

Guwahati: Four candidates officially filed their nomination papers for the upcoming by-elections in Assam, scheduled for November 13.

The assembly constituencies of Behali, Sidli, Bongaigaon, Dholai, and Samaguri will be contested in this election.

BJP candidate Diganta Ghatowar submitted his nomination for the Behali seat, while Sanjib Warie of the Congress filed for the Sidli (ST) seat.

Independent candidate Sailen Sarkar entered the race for Bongaigaon, and Gaur Chandra Das of the SUCI filed for the Dholai (SC) seat.

With these submissions, five candidates have officially entered the bypoll race, including Congress’s Dhrubajyoti Purkayastha, who filed for the Samaguri seat on Tuesday.

However, no nominations have yet been received for Samaguri, where Congress MLA Rakibul Hussain was recently elected to the Lok Sabha from Dhubri with a record margin.

The deadline for filing nominations is October 25, with scrutiny to take place on October 28, and candidates will have until October 30 to withdraw their nominations.

These by-elections were triggered after the sitting MLAs were elected to the Lok Sabha earlier this year.

The prominent leaders include Parimal Suklabaidya of Dholai, Ranjit Dutta of Behali, Phanibhushan Choudhury of Bongaigaon, and Joyanta Basumatary of Sidli, all of whom have vacated their assembly seats after winning parliamentary elections.
