Bypolls: Voting Underway for Four Assembly Seats in Meghalaya, Odisha, UP and Punjab

National Desk, 10 May: Voting is underway for four assembly seats in Odisha and Meghalaya as well as one Lok Sabha seat is Punjab. In the assembly seats of Suar and Chhanbey in Uttar Pradesh, Jharsuguda in Odisha and Sohiong in Meghalaya, voting has already started.

The Lok Sabha seat in Punjab’s Jalandhar fell vacant following the death of Congress MP Santokh Singh Chaudhary. In January of this year, he had a heart attack while participating in the party’s Bharat Jodo Yatra in Jalandhar’s Phillaur.

Due to the fierce competition for the Dalit stronghold in Punjab, all four major political parties—AAP, BJP, Congress and Shiromani Akali Dal are expected to participate in the election.

Suar and Chhanbey seats in Uttar Pradesh will be closely watched since they will serve as a morale booster for the parties in the months leading up to the Lok Sabha election next year. The Samajwadi Party, the opposition and the ruling alliance are competing to win both seats.

The UDP candidate HDR Lyngdoh’s passing before the state Assembly elections on February 27 made a by-election for the Sohiong assembly seat in Meghalaya necessary.

The counting of votes for the bypolls will be held on May 13 which also coincides with the results of the Karnataka Assembly election.
