Cache of explosives recovered just ahead of Independence Day celebrations
Guwahati: In a significant pre-Independence Day breakthrough, security forces on Wednesday unearthed a massive cache of explosives and weaponry in Phinbiru village, nestled along the volatile Assam–Arunachal Pradesh border.
The operation, spearheaded by the Assam Rifles, is believed to have thwarted a major terror plot by insurgent groups, with officials suspecting the stockpile belongs to the ULFA (Independent) and NSCN (KYA) factions. The seizure came a day before the nation’s 79th Independence Day festivities, raising alarms about potential attacks.
The raid took place in Phinbiru, a remote village situated approximately 7 kilometres from Tipong in Margherita, Tinsukia district. The security personnel’s meticulous search led to the discovery of a substantial arsenal, including 18 radio sets and 4 radio chargers, which are crucial for communication during operations.
The haul also comprised 6 electric wires used in bomb-making, a handmade pistol, 59 detonators, 6 primers, 2 bomb fuses, and 60 rounds of live ammunition.
The recovered items have since been handed over to the Assam Police for further investigation. Security agencies are of the opinion that the cache was intended for nefarious activities during the Independence Day celebrations, which were to be held on the following day.
This successful operation is a testament to the heightened vigilance and intelligence coordination of the security forces in the region, ensuring the safety and security of the public during a time of national pride and celebration.
