California: Ban on Sales of Petrol Cars By 2035
Guwahati: As the first US state to do so, California has outlawed the sale of fossil fuel-powered cars. In a recent meeting, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) outlined strict policies aimed at outlawing the sale of gasoline-powered cars by 2035. The board also talked about how to gradually phase out the autos by the deadline.
“This is significant. The most significant action CARB has taken in the past 30 years is this. In an interview with CNN, board member Daniel Sperling said, “It is vital not only for California, but for the nation and the world.
The board has established temporary quotas for zero-emission vehicles in accordance with the new regulations that will go into effect soon. By 2026, 35% of all new automobiles, including compact pickup trucks and SUVs, must be zero-emission vehicles.
The percentage of zero-emission vehicles will rise to 68% by 2030 and 100% by 2035. Having said that, it should be recognised that existing vehicles are exempt from these temporary quotas. There will be no restrictions on used vehicles using the roads.
“The automakers are aware of what is occurring in China and Europe. Many of them have already said that they will be switching entirely to electric vehicles, according to Sperling. Sperling added emphasis to the point by pointing out how little dispute there was during the drafting process because businesses are also preparing for the change in energy sources.
The CARB’s decision is significant and is anticipated to have a cascading effect. It is because California is the state that purchases the most vehicles and trucks in the country. It is anticipated that its effects would be powerful and transformational.
