Canada: Indian-origin man among 2 killed in shooting in Edmonton
International Desk, 9th April: A devastating shooting incident in south Edmonton, Canada, has resulted in the loss of two lives, one of whom was identified as Buta Singh Gill, the proprietor of Gill Built Homes in Edmonton, as reported by CTV News Edmonton.
Responding to a shooting report in the vicinity of Cavanagh Boulevard Southwest and Cherniak Way Southwest on Monday, the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) found three injured males. Sadly, two of them, aged 49 and 57, succumbed to their injuries, while a 51-year-old man sustained serious life-threatening injuries and was rushed to the hospital.
The EPS homicide section has assumed control of the investigation, with autopsies scheduled for the deceased on Tuesday and Wednesday. Notably, the police have stated that they are not actively seeking any suspects related to the shooting.
Family and community members gathered at the scene to mourn Buta Singh Gill’s loss, recalling him as a compassionate individual always willing to aid others without expecting anything in return.
Former Edmonton city councillor Mohinder Banga expressed shock and sadness at Gill’s tragic demise, emphasizing his generosity and readiness to help those in need. Community members echoed similar sentiments, expressing disbelief and sorrow at the untimely loss.
Eyewitnesses like Lindsay Hilton and Abby Sieban provided accounts shedding light on the sudden and chaotic nature of the incident, with Hilton describing the abruptness of the shooting and the subsequent shock it induced.
The Edmonton Police Service has advised citizens to avoid the area as investigations continue, stressing that there are no immediate safety concerns for the public. The shooting has deeply impacted the community, prompting reflections on the necessity of heightened vigilance and safety measures in residential areas.
