Ceasefire Sparks Political Face-off: Assam Congress Leader Questions Transparency
Guwahati: A fresh political row has erupted in Assam over the recent ceasefire between India and Pakistan, with Assam Legislative Assembly Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia questioning the Narendra Modi-led central government’s “lack of transparency” regarding the development.
Speaking to the media, the Congress leader said, “Not only the Congress, the people of the country are questioning the Prime Minister—why did the ceasefire happen so suddenly? For the first time, the Prime Minister convened an all-party meeting, and we said that the government should take every possible effort, and all such efforts would be supported by the opposition… But I still don’t know what the current status is because there has been no clear official communication.”
Saikia urged the government to keep both the opposition and the public informed about any future developments related to national security, highlighting that such matters require bipartisan understanding.
In a strong rebuttal, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, during a press conference earlier on May 13, stated that the Congress had no moral right to question the Prime Minister.
Defending the ceasefire decision, Sarma said, “The objective of Operation Sindoor was to punish and dismantle the terror network, and it was achieved successfully on the night of May 6 itself.”
He claimed Pakistan retaliated on behalf of the terrorists, to which India responded “bravely.” “When Pakistan realised that if they continued, they would be massacred, they surrendered,” Sarma asserted.
The ceasefire, which was reportedly announced by both India and Pakistan following heightened tensions in the aftermath of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, has been surrounded by questions from opposition leaders seeking clarity on India’s long-term security strategy.
The contrasting views from Assam’s political heavyweights underscore the growing friction over national security decisions during the ongoing election season.
