Ceasefire with Kuki militant groups extended for a year in Manipur
Guwahati: The ceasefire pact between the Kuki militant groups and the centre and state governments has been extended for another year with effect from March 1.
The Suspension of Operation (SoO) have signed over 25 Kuki militant organisations under the auspices of two apex bodies, the Kuki National Organisation (KNO) and the United People’s Front (UPF).
The ceasefire pact was first signed in 2008 has been renewed on a regular basis since then. Groups who have earlier sought for a separate Kuki state within Manipur have now requested a (Kuki) territorial council, and political discussions on the matter have already begun.
Furthermore, the KNO is linked to roughly 17 groups while the UPF is linked to eight and its cadres are presently housed in government-run camps.
