Chaos in Assam Assembly as Resolution to Rename Dibrugarh Airport Sparks Protests
Guwahati: Tensions flared in the Assam Assembly on June 9 during a special session called to recommend renaming the Dibrugarh airport after the legendary Bhupen Hazarika. The session was abruptly adjourned for 30 minutes following loud protests from opposition members over unrelated issues concerning foreigners.
Transport Minister Jogen Mohan moved the government resolution seeking a unanimous recommendation to the central government to rename the airport as ‘Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika Airport,’ in line with the state cabinet’s earlier decision to honor Hazarika’s birth centenary.
However, as Mohan began reading the resolution, opposition lawmakers from Congress and AIUDF erupted in protest, disrupting proceedings with demands and slogans centered on foreigner identification and deportation policies. Several legislators from both parties stormed the Well of the House in a show of defiance.
While Congress MLAs soon returned to their seats, AIUDF members remained seated on the floor, prolonging the disorder. Speaker Biswajit Daimary was forced to intervene and adjourn the session for half an hour to restore decorum. The disruption highlighted ongoing political tensions linked to immigration issues overshadowing the state’s efforts to commemorate Bhupen Hazarika.
