Chennai girl dies by suicide after failing NEET exam

Guwahati: A 19-year-old Chennai girl allegedly committed suicide on September 7 in Ambattur of Tamil Nadu after failing the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET), the results of which were released yesterday.

The teenager made the drastic decision just hours after the results were announced, according to India Today.

The girl’s family hurried her to the KMC hospital in Chennai as soon as they learned about the tragedy, but she was later pronounced “brought dead.” The body was recovered by police, who then sent it for an autopsy.

Only 67,787 of the 1, 32,167 candidates from Tamil Nadu who registered for the NEET exam ultimately passed the test.

Students who wanted to study medicine were admitted based on their combined marks from their 12th-grade grades and entrance exam results from a state-wide test before the NEET exams became required in 2017.

This is not the first time in the state that a NEET candidate has committed suicide. In July, a day before the exam, a girl died by suicide in Tamil Nadu’s Ariyalur. According to the story, police discovered a letter the girl had written in which she claimed she had taken the drastic measure out of fear of failing the test.

Another suicide occurred in early July involving an 18-year-old boy. According to a suicide note that was discovered in his room, he took the drastic action since the NEET exam was too challenging and he wasn’t able to achieve the grades he was hoping for.
