China’s President Xi Jinping Creates History
Guwahati: The president of China Xi Jinping with his historic election to a third term as China’s president joins the ranks of the most powerful leaders the country has known since Mao Zedong established the Chinese Communist Party.
At the committee’s first plenary meeting on Sunday, Xi Jinping was chosen to serve as general secretary of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), according to state media outlet Xinhua.
203 members of the 20th CPC Central Committee and 168 alternate members participated in the session led by Xi. At the meeting, Xi was also appointed head of the CPC Central Military Commission.
After a week of deliberations, the once every five years National Congress came to an end. The newly established Central Committee, the primary leadership body of the party, was made public during the Congress and featured Xi. Only 11 of the 205 members mentioned are women, according to CNN.
Since the Chinese Premier, who is the second-highest ranking official behind Xi, is not included in the new Central Committee, Li will step down from his party position.
The unceremonious retirement from Congress of former President Hu Jintao caused outrage on Saturday. During the closing ceremony, the 79-year-old former leader, Xi Jinping’s predecessor, was unannouncedly taken out of the hall by two men.
Hu was reportedly “not feeling well” when he was abruptly ejected from the 20th Congress of the Chinese Communist Party’s closing ceremony on Saturday.
“Xinhuanet reporter Liu Jiawen has learned that Hu Jintao insisted on attending the closing session… despite the fact that he has been taking time to recuperate recently,” Xinhua said on Twitter.
“When he was not feeling well during the session, his staff, for his health, accompanied him to a room next to the meeting venue for a rest. Now, he is much better,” the state agency added.
One of the most dangerous times in recent years for international relations coincided with the congress. China continues to be a steadfast supporter of President Vladimir Putin, who is trying to establish himself as a great Russian leader when a war is raging in Ukraine.
