Christians in Mizoram Solemnly Observe Good Friday

Northeast Desk, 29th March: Christians across Mizoram marked Good Friday with solemn observances, reflecting on the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, which took place at Golgotha on the outskirts of Jerusalem. Good Friday, also known as Black Friday, is a day of profound significance for Christians worldwide, commemorating Jesus’ sacrifice for humanity and prompting deep contemplation on the meaning of his death.

In Mizoram, Protestant churches led the observance with various activities, including church services, sermons, and hymns performed by church choirs. The day was divided into morning, afternoon, and evening sessions, with services focusing on selected Bible verses and prayers. After the morning service, many churches extended their outreach to hospitals, where pastors and church elders held brief services for patients unable to attend.

Praise and worship sessions followed the afternoon service, fostering a sense of spiritual reflection and community bonding. Additionally, on Maundy Thursday, all churches organized Holy Communion services, with the Catholic Church emphasizing humility by cleansing the feet of congregants, mirroring Jesus’ act of washing his disciples’ feet.

On Good Friday, abstaining from meat consumption was a common practice among believers. Altars remained bare, symbolizing solemnity, while services centered around commemorating the Lord’s Passion through rituals like the veneration of the cross and Holy Communion. Although Mass was not celebrated, churches offered services dedicated to honoring Jesus’ sacrifice.

In the afternoon, poignant street processions took place, with participants carrying crosses to symbolize Jesus’ agonizing journey to Golgotha, where he faced crucifixion. This act served as a visual representation of Jesus’ sacrifice and the solemnity of the occasion, uniting believers in their reverence for Good Friday’s significance.
