Churachandpur Faces Complete Shutdown on Second Anniversary of Manipur Crisis
Imphal: Churachandpur district in Manipur witnessed a complete shutdown today, called by a joint student body to mark the second anniversary of the ethnic crisis that first erupted on May 3, 2023.
The shutdown is a poignant reminder of the enduring unrest and unresolved issues that continue to plague the region.
The impact of the shutdown was evident across Churachandpur, with shops shuttered, educational institutions closed, and transport services suspended.
The student body’s action aimed to draw the urgent attention of the nation to the ongoing challenges faced by the people of Manipur.
In response to the shutdown and the approaching anniversary, security measures have been significantly heightened across the state.
Police have intensified frisking and vehicle checks in key areas including Imphal, Churachandpur, and Kangpokpi district headquarters, in a bid to maintain peace and deter any untoward incidents.
Security has also been notably increased around Khuman Lampak in Imphal, the scheduled venue for the Manipur People’s Convention.
Adding to the security presence, central forces have been deployed in front of Kangla Gate. Officials have stated that these enhanced security arrangements are a precautionary step to prevent any disturbances, particularly on this sensitive second anniversary.
Meanwhile, the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity, a prominent Meitei social organization, has appealed to the public to observe May 3 by suspending all activities and participating in the convention, underscoring the continued significance of this date for the state.
