Civilian Mistaken for Poacher Shot in Baksa

Guwahati: Forest personnel opened fire on a civilian after suspected him of being a poacher, resulting in a serious bullet wound at Batabari in the Baksa district of Assam.

The victim has been identified as Nirmal Basumatary. He was transferred to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for advanced treatment after suffering a critical injury.

The incident took place at the Batabari range near the border with Bhutan on Saturday night.

According to reports, Nirmal was in the forest gathering wood when the incident took place.

Meanwhile, the police arrived on the scene and began their investigation after learning about the incident.

Nirmal was admitted to the Baksa civil hospital, but because of his failing health, he was transferred to the GMCH.

On the other hand, the police have arrested Rakesh Islari, another individual. Islari had travelled to the jungle with Nirmal.

Further details on the incident will come to light after the police interrogation is over.
