CJI NV Ramana Names Uday Umesh Lalit as his Successor

Guwahati: Chief Justice NV Ramana, proposed Justice Uday Umesh Lalit to the Centre as his successor, the most senior judge in India. The Chief Justice of India personally gave Justice Lalit a copy of his letter of recommendation.

On April 24, 2021, Judge Ramana succeeded S. A. Bobde as chief justice of India. He will leave office on August 26 after serving as chief justice for more than 16 months. The top judge of India, Justice Lalit, will take office on August 27 and hold the position for less than three months. He will retire on November 8 of this year.

The Minister of Law and Justice sent a notification on Wednesday asking for someone to be nominated to succeed Justice Ramana, who would step down from his position on August 26 due to superannuation.

“Today (03.08.2022) at 2130 hrs, the Secretariat of the Chief Justice of India has received a message dated 03.08.2022 from the Minister of Law and Justice requesting the CJI to recommend the name of his successor,” the top court stated in a communication on Wednesday.

The Law Minister requests the retiring CJI’s suggestion before designating his successor in accordance with the Memorandum of Procedure. The suggestion is often requested within a month after the current Chief Justice of India retires.
