The National Medical Council has approved the admission of 100 students in the first batch, who will begin classes today.
A separate academic building and dormitories have been constructed for the Lakhimpur Medical College and Hospital (LMCH). It features 80 intensive care units, seven operating rooms, and other cutting-edge equipment.
There are 122 interns and 66 resident staff members in addition to the normal medical personnel.
The college’s foundation stone was laid in 2011. The construction work, however, resumed in 2017 after several delays. At a total cost of Rs 580 crores, the project was completed.
CM Sarma said the Assam medical education department will petition the National Medical Council to upgrade the institution with post-graduate programmes after the first five years of the MBBS programme.
