CM Sarma Reviews Relief Efforts in Hailakandi as Assam Flood Crisis Persists
Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday personally reviewed the conditions at a major flood relief camp in Hailakandi, where hundreds of displaced residents are currently taking shelter. The Chief Minister’s visit underscores the severity of the flood crisis that has disrupted lives across the state, impacting over 5.6 lakh people in 19 districts.
Following his inspection, Sarma confirmed that the state government has deployed fully equipped medical teams to address health concerns among those housed in relief camps. “We are providing all necessary facilities,” he stated on social media, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to managing the humanitarian crisis with urgency and care.
In addition to Hailakandi, Sarma also received updates from other badly affected areas, including Kalinagar and Panchgram. He emphasized that the state government is actively coordinating efforts to reach those most impacted, ensuring the uninterrupted delivery of food, shelter, and medical assistance.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), floodwaters have begun to recede in some districts like Morigaon. However, the situation remains far from normal, with 117 villages in Morigaon still submerged and access to basic services severely restricted.
In Sribhumi, widespread flooding has crippled daily life. Homes and commercial establishments are underwater, and in areas like Baatgram in North Sribhumi, reports indicate extensive damage to infrastructure and property. Residents continue to face acute challenges, with many forced to take refuge on higher ground or in temporary shelters.
As conditions remain volatile, the state government has urged people in flood-prone areas to stay alert and adhere to safety advisories. Relief and rescue operations are being carried out around the clock, as authorities work to restore normalcy and prevent further loss.
