CM Sarma Vows to Reclaim ‘Every Inch’ of Encroached Land for Indigenous Assamese
Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today asserted his government’s unwavering resolve to reclaim all land illegally encroached upon across the state, dedicating the aggressive drive to the indigenous populace of Assam. Speaking emphatically to reporters, Sarma declared, “Every inch of encroached land will be reclaimed for the indigenous people of Assam.”
He further stated his deep personal commitment to the cause, saying, “I’m addicted to protecting our lands. Every Assamese must rise to reclaim what’s rightfully ours. I am addictively committed to reclaiming illegally encroached forest and wetlands and return them to our people.” The Chief Minister indicated that the public should anticipate a significant intensification of eviction drives within the next month, reiterating his firm stand with, “I am fully determined—there will be no compromise on this.”
Drawing parallels with historical efforts in the state, Sarma highlighted his administration’s achievements, noting, “In Assam’s history, after Bishnuram Medhi, I am the only Chief Minister to have reclaimed such vast land from illegal encroachments.” This renewed emphasis by the Assam government on enforcing land rights for indigenous communities is expected to ignite further discussions concerning land, identity, and settlement patterns within the state, even as past eviction efforts have drawn scrutiny over humanitarian and political implications.
