College Principal in Assam Suspended for protesting against renaming of Bhabanipur constituency

Guwahati, 15th July: Mukunda Sharma, the principal of Bhawanipur Anchalik College, was suspended for taking part in a protest against the government’s plan to rename the Bhabanipur seat in Assam.

Recently, the Assam government proposed renaming the Bhabanipur constituency to the Barnagar constituency to the Indian Election Commission.

This suggestion resulted in a significant protest at Bhabanipur, in which Mukunda Sharma, a government worker, also participated.

He was later suspended, therefore his participation did not go well.

The Director of Higher Education issued an order to suspend him after taking note of his involvement in the demonstration.

The Assam Service (Discipline and Appeal) Rules 1964 were referenced by the directorate.

The order read, “In pursuance of Govt. letter Ref No. 335417, dated 13/07/2023, pending as per Assam Service (Discipline and Appeal) Rules 1964, Dr Mukunda Sharma, principal of Bhabanipur Anchalik College, P.O. Bhabanipur, DIST. Barpeta is hereby placed under suspension for participating in an agitation program against Constitutional authority with immediate effect.”
