Comedian Kunal Kamra Granted Interim Anticipatory Bail Amidst Legal Trouble

National: Kunal Kamra, a renowned stand-up comedian, is facing legal repercussions after three separate FIRs were filed against him at Khar Police Station.

The complaints allege that Kamra made contentious remarks about Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

According to Mumbai Police, the complainants include the Mayor of Jalgaon, a hotelier, and a businessman from Nashik.

Despite being summoned twice for questioning, Kamra has not appeared before Khar Police for investigation. A third summons was issued on March 27, directing him to present himself at Khar Police Station on March 31.

This latest FIR was filed by Shiv Sena MLA Murji Patel, and Kamra has previously ignored two summons in the same case.

Amidst rising legal pressure, Kamra approached the Madras High Court, seeking transit anticipatory bail. He cited numerous threats he received following his recent satirical remarks.

On Friday, March 29, Justice Sunder Mohan granted interim anticipatory bail until April 7, imposing specific conditions on the comedian.

Kamra’s counsel argued that satire is protected as part of free speech, and the comedian had not specifically named anyone in his show.

The court noted that Kamra is unable to approach courts in Maharashtra due to threats of physical violence against him by political party workers.
