Concession for AI Traffic Challans: Sikkim CM Offers Relief
Gangtok – In a significant move aimed at easing the burden on motorists, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang today announced a 50 per cent concession on all AI-generated traffic challans. The announcement, made during the Sarathi Samman Diwas celebrations, also included an extension of the fine payment window from the current 15 days to a more generous two months.
Addressing a diverse gathering of transport workers, government officials, and citizens, CM Tamang underscored the government’s commitment to striking a balance between stringent enforcement and compassionate governance. “This is a step towards balancing enforcement with empathy,” he stated, adding, “While road safety is paramount, we must also understand the financial pressures faced by our driving community. This concession and extended timeline will allow more people to clear dues without added hardship.”
The decision comes amidst growing concerns among vehicle owners regarding the increased volume and hefty penalties associated with challans issued through the newly implemented AI-based traffic monitoring systems. The government hopes this measure will not only encourage greater compliance but also provide much-needed relief to those facing genuine financial constraints.
The announcements were a highlight of the Sarathi Samman Diwas, a day dedicated to acknowledging the invaluable contributions of drivers who form the backbone of the state’s transportation network. Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Tamang had also launched a Rs 5 lakh medical insurance scheme specifically for commercial taxi drivers, further demonstrating the government’s focus on the welfare of the transport community.
