Congress Accuses BJP of Using Voter List Revision to Target Opposition Supporters in Assam

Guwahati: The Congress party has launched a sharp attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), alleging a systematic attempt to delete opposition supporters from Assam’s electoral rolls under the guise of voter list revision ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. At a press conference, Congress national spokesperson Charan Singh Sapra accused the Election Commission (EC) of acting under political pressure and undermining democratic processes by launching large-scale voter roll revisions without transparency or public consultation.

Sapra claimed the EC had begun similar “intensive revision” exercises in poll-bound Bihar without prior notice or interaction with stakeholders, describing the move as “authoritarian” and questioning the Commission’s neutrality. “The Commission is meant to be a neutral umpire, but it has now become a player itself — playing for the ruling party,” he said, further alleging that the EC had begun “playing hide-and-seek” with citizens.

Echoing Sapra’s concerns, former MP and state Congress leader Ripun Bora alleged that Assam is now witnessing a similar BJP-led conspiracy, with the EC being used to selectively remove Congress supporters from voter rolls. “Just like in Maharashtra and Bihar, the BJP is now using the EC in Assam to carry out a revision drive that targets Congress voters in the name of cleansing,” Bora charged.

Bora pointed to Maharashtra as an example of alleged electoral manipulation, claiming that between the Lok Sabha elections in April-May 2024 and the upcoming Assembly elections in November, 47 lakh new voters were added. “In 50 constituencies, over 50,000 new voters were added, many of them reportedly BJP supporters brought in from neighbouring states to influence the outcome,” he said.

The Congress leader warned that similar tactics could be deployed in Assam to influence the 2026 elections. He also expressed concern over the BJP-led state government issuing notices to suspected “D-voters” or individuals tagged as foreigners, many of whom, he claimed, are loyal Congress supporters. These notices, he alleged, are part of a larger strategy to strip traditional opposition voters of their democratic rights.

In response to the growing threat, the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has begun training Block Level Agents (BLAs) to monitor and counter such tactics during the voter verification and revision process. Bora urged the Election Commission to uphold its constitutional responsibility and resist becoming a tool for any political party’s “undemocratic designs.”

Calling for public vigilance, Congress leaders demanded a fair and transparent electoral roll revision process in Assam and warned of a strong resistance against any attempt to tamper with the state’s democratic fabric.
