Congress Accuses Manipur Governor of Violating Constitution
Imphal: The Congress party on Tuesday accused the Manipur Governor of violating Article 174(1) of the Constitution by not summoning the state assembly for its constitutionally mandated session.
Article 174(1) mandates that no more than six months can elapse between the last sitting of an assembly session and the first sitting of the next session.
Congress communications in-charge Jairam Ramesh pointed out that today marks the last day for a constitutionally mandated session of the Manipur Legislative Assembly.
Ramesh stated that the previous session was declared null and void after the BJP failed to appoint a successor to the Chief Minister, against whom the Congress planned to move a no-confidence motion. This move followed the Chief Minister’s resignation on Sunday night.
These remarks come two days after N. Biren Singh resigned as Chief Minister, a move the Congress described as “belated.” The party also called for a visit from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address the ongoing crisis in Manipur.
Ethnic violence has gripped Manipur since May 2023, resulting in over 250 deaths and displacing thousands of people.
